Japan Ukiyo-e Museum

The Japan Ukiyoe Museum exhibits ukiyoe (woodblock prints) from the vast collection of the Sakai family.

One of Matsumoto's wealthiest merchants of his times, Sakai Yoshiaki started collecting ukiyoe and other pieces of art roughly 300 years ago. His descendants have been enlarging the collection to over 100,000 pieces, making it one of the world's largest private art collections.

Compared to the size of the collection and the museum building, the number of works exhibited in the Japan Ukiyoe Museum is rather small, partly due to the fact that the building was originally built solely for storage rather than exhibition purposes. English descriptions for the exhibits are brief.

How to get there
The Japan Ukiyoe Museum is located about 3 kilometers outside of Matsumoto's city center, close to Matsumoto Interchange of the Nagano Expressway.

The museum can be reached in a 10 minute taxi ride from Matsumoto Station (about 1000-1500 Yen) or in a 15-20 minute walk from Oniwa Station on the Matsumoto Dentetsu Kamikochi Line (5 minutes, 170 Yen from Matsumoto Station).

Gedong Songo (nine buildings), a group of small 8th century Hindu Javanese temples, can be reached either by car or on horseback from the town. Built at about the same time as the temples of the Dieng complex, Gedong Songo is one of the most beautifully sited temple complexes in Central Java and the views alone are worth the trip. Gedung Songo ('Nine Buildings') belong to the earliest antiquities of Java, they follow up the temples on the Dieng Plateau directly, for what about time. They were also built high in the mountains in an area full with volcanic activity; and they were also from Hinduist origin. But where the temples on Dieng Plateau are somewhat squeezed into a foggy valley, Gedung Songo are spread over the higher parts of the mountains, which guarantee a splendid view. On clear days, the horizon is one long row of volcanoes, from mount Lawu in the east, towards mount Sumbing, mount Sund...
